GIX Welcomes Second Student Cohort

Date: September 28, 2018

Cohort 2 MSTI & Dual Degree students practicing block printing in the GIX makerspace during orientation.

The start of our second school year is an exciting time at GIX.

Last week, GIX welcomed 44 new students from diverse backgrounds and around the world into our MSTI and Dual Degree programs. While our current student cohort gears up for a busy last quarter, where most of their time will be spent on their final launch projects, the new student cohort is beginning to get to know GIX faculty, staff, and their fellow classmates.

This month also marked the one-year anniversary of the opening of the state-of-the art GIX Steve Ballmer Building in Bellevue, and it’s been a pleasure to see the innovative and impactful accomplishments our students have made so far, including coming in second for the prestigious XPRIZE competition and having their projects and papers accepted into conferences and featured in numerous media outlets including Raspberry Pi, GeekWire, Puget Sound Business Journal, The Seattle Times, and USA Today.

What makes GIX students unique?

Across both the current and new student cohort, GIX students collectively represent 14 countries and four continents. While each student brings their own set of ideas, cultural frameworks, and educational and professional backgrounds, it’s equally inspiring to recognize the many commonalities that bring the group together. Many share an interest in renewable energy and using smart technology to improve the environment. Several also have goals to become startup founders, product managers, or pursue other leadership roles. Most dominantly, the group shares a passion for emerging technologies and a drive to apply technology in a way that positively impacts and shapes the local and global community.

Meet a few of the new GIX students

We will be featuring news about more students and their profiles during the coming months. For now, we are pleased to introduce three members of our new student cohort:

Sixuan Li is one of the 14 women who make up approximately 32% of the new cohort. Sixuan recently completed her undergraduate degree in Industrial Design, minoring in Entrepreneurial Management from Zhejiang University in Beijing. She has strong interest in deepening her knowledge of ubiquitous computing, haptic interaction, AR/VR, and IoT through the GIX program.

Angela Sun was previously a strategy consultant for several Fortune 500 clients in seven different industries, some of which include Intel, Johnson, and Deloitte. Angela said that many of the CEOs and leadership teams she worked with identified the need for a technology innovation strategy, which is why she decided to pursue her master’s degree with GIX.

Ricky Powell is an Air Force veteran currently serving as an active duty Coast Guard officer. He was previously involved in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in military defense operations, in which he coordinated with pilots, control stations, and troops on the ground to facilitate drone data dissemination. Describing himself as a “tinkerer at heart,” Powell said that after seeing the makerspace, he knew GIX was the right program for him.
