Graduation for the first cohort of our GIX Master of Science in Technology Innovation (MSTI) and Dual Degree students is just around the corner! This means many of our soon-to-graduate GIX students are focused on finding or creating jobs that match their career goals.

Students have begun their employment search and are interviewing with companies such as Microsoft, Google, Twitter, and Uber while some have already been offered roles from companies like Alibaba, Amino Capital, Baidu, and Huawei Cloud. Other students are creating startups after graduation based on their student projects.

A select few GIX students have also been offered initial investment funds to pursue their technology innovation startup ideas.

Career Opportunities for GIX Students

The GIX MSTI and Dual Degree programs prepare students to either step into the startup world as tech entrepreneurs or move into roles in rapid-growth fields like product development, software management, and technology.

Pioneering a project-based, interdisciplinary education model, which integrates technology development, design thinking, and entrepreneurship, GIX graduate programs strive to equip students with the multifaceted skillset required to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams and solve complex problems.

Companies across many sectors recognize the need for these skills as the pace of technology development and innovation escalates.

New specialist roles in emerging technologies are in demand

According to the 2018 Future of Jobs report from the World Economic Forum, there’s an accelerating demand for new roles that leverage the emerging technologies our students use, such as robotics, connected devices, IoT, AI, machine learning, blockchain, and AR/VR. Examples of these roles include:

  • AI and Machine Learning Specialists
  • User Experience and Human-Machine Interaction Designers
  • Robotics Engineers
  • Blockchain Specialists

Fields like AI, IoT, and AR/VR continue to grow worldwide, as does the need for talent in these areas

The demand for IoT talent has surged by 300 percent since 2014, showed a recent report in the Economic Times, and industry analysts are predicting these trends will continue.

In fact, IoT is projected to grow by about 3 billion new connected devices per year, reaching as many as 30 billion devices by 2020 and 75 billion in 2025.

On job-posting platforms like Indeed and SmartRecruiters, we’ve seen dramatic increases in the number of job descriptions that require expertise in AR/VR – another emerging technology that GIX students have leveraged and learned more about through our graduate programs. According to SmartRecruiters, more AR/VR-related jobs cropped up in the first quarter of 2018 than all of 2015.

In the field of AI, machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing are the three most in-demand skills on Monster.com. In general, the share of jobs that require AI expertise has increased by 450% since 2013, according to Adobe.

Adobe also claims investment into AI startups by venture capitalists has soared six-fold since 2000, which is great news for students interested in launching their own AI-driven products and services after graduation.
