Capstone Project

Deep Blue

Problem

Sunflower sea stars have experienced a 90.6% population decline since 2013 due to Sea Star Wasting Disease. Traditional deep-sea research is limited by diver depth restrictions, high costs, and inefficient data collection methods.

Approach

The team developed DeepBlue, a cost-effective underwater ROV equipped with cameras, GPS, sonar, and AI-driven detection. It automates sea star detection and data collection, improving precision and accessibility for marine research.

Solution

DeepBlue enables efficient surveying of echinoderm populations with real-time visualization and automated navigation. It generates accurate species distribution maps while reducing manual effort and research costs.
