Capstone Project

DIRECT

A person wearing a mask and gloves operates an optical device resembling a camera, pointed at their eye. A laptop screen next to them displays retinal images and a user interface for alignment and analysis.

Problem

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness not only in the USA but also in developing countries. However, fundus cameras to detect DR can cost upwards of $20k and require trained medical professionals to operate.

Approach

After developing hardware and software prototypes, the team went through three rounds of evaluation to get feedback on their designs.

Solution

Their proposed solution is a portable low-cost fundus camera with AI-based software and a supporting web app to facilitate data collection.
