Capstone Project

Rapid Response

Problem

As of 11/28/22, there have been 46 school shootings that resulted in injuries or deaths in 2022, up from 35 in 2021. School shootings occur in a rapidly changing environment, unfold over a relatively short period of time, and require clear communication across multiple organizations to successfully stop the attacker as fast as possible

Approach

The team conducted interviews with 12 first responders to learn about the typical school schooting response and discover challenges when responding to school shootin incidents. Triangulation of insights gained through research and interviews led to the team developing 6 core design requirements.

Solution

Rapid Response is composed of two components: a lens, which is installed in each classroom to identify assailants, weapons, and civilians in a room. The second component is a web app which collects data and generates a detailed and interactive map for first repsonders to quickly identify high threat areas and coordinate their response.
