Weather Box
Problem
Identifying changing environmental conditions is a critical task for Fire Behavior Analysts (FBAN) and Incident Meteorologists (IMET). To take the neccessary measurments, field observers have to hike many miles into remote locations, where traditional automated weather stations cannot be deployed.
Approach
Team Weather Box conducted 4 interviews with subject matter experts from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to define the problem scope. After creating several prototypes, they conducted usability and functionality tests.
Solution
Weather Box replaces the analog and time consuming weather observation techniques with a set of compact weather stations that communicate using a LoRA mesh network. These devices can be left in the field for extended periods of time to collect data automatically, sending this data back to a web interface.
