Xweather

Problem

The surrounding environment significantly influences human behavior in responding to extreme weather conditions. There are more than 1,300 deaths per year in the United States attributed to extreme heat. Emergency managers currently lack effective ways in mitigating this situation, because they often respond based on the overall city climate report, disregarding the distinct microclimates that can vary considerably across different areas within the city.

Approach

The team developed prototypes of the dashboard interface, focusing on usability and accessibility. They then conducted usability testing with University of Washington Emergency Management to gather feedback on the prototype.

Solution

Utilizing Vaisala's TempCast sensor measurements and inpcorporating cirtical safety recommendations alongside other pertinent open-source data streams, the team developed a comprehensive heat mointoring dashboard.
