Capstone Project

Corgo

A cargo plane with Prime Air partially visible is being loaded. A person in a safety vest walks down stairs from the open cargo hold, and another person stands nearby. Loading equipment and a red container are in the foreground.

Problem

Commercial jet aircraft use an auxiliary power unit (APU) for energy generation while the main engines are off. Despite airline policy, APUs are often left to run longer than necessary, resulting in excess pollution.

Approach

Team Corgo worked with SeaTac Airport to develop a system that detects, monitors and reports APU usage to aid policy enforcement.

Solution

The team built and installed three sound-gathering devices around SeaTac, which listen for specific sounds generated by APUs. This audio is analyzed by their trained machine learning model, and results are displayed on a custom dashboard.
