Problem

Wildfire management teams are forced to send out observers on foot into the forest to collect data on vegetation below the canopy to help better characterize the burn risk of a forest.

Approach

The team conducted a contextual inquiry, SME interviews, and a field study before honing in on the problem they wanted to solve. They then developed prototypes and performed usability testing with their potential customers.

Solution

FireBOT provides wildfire management teams with the ability to activate a drone to autonomously collect surface fuel type data. Using a mobile phone-based UI, operators can plot multiple GPS points for the drone and monitor flight status via live stream video as well as manually intervene if needed.
