Capstone Project

FireWorks Smart Helmet

Problem

Since 2000, 169 wildland firefighters have lost their lives in the field due to overexertion under hot and challenging conditions. Currently the only method used to prevent overexertion is human observation.

Approach

The interviewed 15+ wildland firefighters and creq supervisors as well as 5 medical experts to gauge the scope of the problemthey were trying to solve.

Solution

FireWorks is a smart helmet that incorporates heart rate, temperature, and movement data to alert firefighters and their supervisors about potentially hazardous heat-related illnesses. The accompanying app creates data visualizations and alerts the user when abnormal data is sent from one or more helmets.
